Project Background:
The Sanmenxia Water Control Project is located on the main stream of the middle Yellow River at the junction of Sanmenxia City, Henan Province, and Pinglu County, Shanxi Province. It was the first large-scale water control project built on the Yellow River after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Construction began in April 1957, and the reservoir began impoundment in September 1960. It serves comprehensive functions including flood control, ice-jam prevention, water supply, irrigation, power generation, sedimentation reduction, and ecological regulation. Since its operation, it has played an irreplaceable role in ensuring flood safety in the lower Yellow River, mitigating ice-jam disasters, and supporting regional socioeconomic development. However, under multiple factors including long-term high-water-level operation, sediment scouring and abrasion, freeze-thaw cycles, alkali-aggregate reaction, natural material aging, and upgraded seismic fortification standards, the dam and auxiliary facilities have developed varying degrees of performance degradation. Through this systematic reinforcement and digital transformation, the Sanmenxia Water Control Project will, on the basis of safeguarding the "tranquility of the Yellow River," continue to play its strategic role in the national water network, energy supply security, and ecological restoration, providing solid support for the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin, and allowing this "firstborn project of the Republic" to radiate new glory in the new era.
