Chenhang Reservoir

Chenhang Reservoir in Shanghai is located on the outer side of the Yangtze River embankment in the eastern part of Luojing Town, Baoshan District, Shanghai. It is Shanghai's first reservoir built with the Yangtze River as its water source, designed to avoid saltwater intrusion and store freshwater. Construction began in the late 1980s and it was officially put into operation in 1992. However, due to factors such as its relatively small storage capacity, its geographical position at the forefront of saltwater intrusion near the Yangtze estuary, long-term high-load operation, and natural material aging, Chenhang Reservoir faces severe challenges under extreme hydrological conditions, especially during the dry winter season. Through this capacity-enhancing and reinforcement project, Chenhang Reservoir will significantly improve its raw water supply capacity during saltwater intrusion periods without occupying additional land. It will also strengthen its interconnected resilience with the Qingcaosha Reservoir, building a more reliable "first line of defense" for the drinking water safety of millions of people in northern Shanghai, and effectively supporting the safe, stable, and high-quality operation of the water supply system in this megacity.
