Project Background:
Baihetan Hydropower Station is located on the main stream of the lower Jinsha River at the junction of Ningnan County, Sichuan Province, and Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province, China. It is a major strategic project of the national "West-to-East Power Transmission" initiative, the second of the four cascade hydropower stations in the lower Jinsha River (Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba), and the world's largest hydropower station under construction with the highest technical difficulty and the largest single-unit capacity (1 million kilowatts) among million-kilowatt-class units. However, since impoundment and operation began, the project has been subjected to extreme combined loads including ultra-high water heads (over 200 meters), strong seismic zones (fortified for intensity VIII), high-velocity sediment-laden flow scouring, dry-hot valley climate (large diurnal temperature variations and intense ultraviolet radiation), and high-frequency vibration from giant units. Despite this, certain structural elements have still developed minor deterioration related to material property evolution, hydraulic abrasion, and temperature-stress coupling, necessitating proactive preventive maintenance.
