  • Project Location:

    Chongqing

  • Project Background:

The "four connections and one leveling" (road, water, electricity, and communication access plus site leveling) stage of the Chongqing North Converter Station for the Hami–Chongqing ±800 kV UHV DC Transmission Project is a critical pre-construction phase for the first UHV DC receiving-end station in Southwest China. The project is located in Chaomiyan, Dawan Town, Yubei District, Chongqing, with a complex topography of "six ridges, seven gullies, and one river channel" and a maximum elevation difference of 66 meters. Site leveling required 2.92 million cubic meters of earthwork excavation and filling, making it the largest such endeavor in Chongqing's power grid history. Land acquisition began in August 2023, and within 62 days, 79 rural houses within the red line were demolished and 18,500 square meters of buildings were cleared. Full site leveling was achieved by November 18, setting a new speed record for similar projects. Simultaneously, road, water, electricity, and communication network access were completed, laying the foundation for subsequent main construction of the converter station. The converter station covers a total area of 27.13 hectares (equivalent to approximately 40 standard football pitches), with a supporting 580-ton GIS facility. The core equipment, the converter transformer, weighs 272 tons per unit and requires combined water-land transport across 7 provinces. As a key national energy project during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the project was officially put into operation on June 10, 2025, transmitting over 36 billion kWh of clean electricity annually, meeting nearly one-fifth of Chongqing's power grid demand and supporting the achievement of the "dual carbon" goals.
