Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, as a core aviation hub in Southwest China, has been in operation for 85 years. Under long-term high-load operations, the aging of core facilities has become prominent. The runway and taxiway systems have developed distresses such as pumping, voids, and cracking. The performance of structural components in the terminal and cargo areas has degraded. Furthermore, the layout of aircraft stands and the land-side ground transportation capacity no longer match market demand. The levels of intelligence and power supply reliability are insufficient. The safety redundancy and service quality of the facilities are struggling to meet the needs of high-quality development, becoming a core bottleneck in the airport's operations. Concurrently, the upgrading of civil aviation standards for "Four-Type Airports," the development strategy of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, and the coordinated operation of Chengdu's dual-airport system ("two airports as one") all impose higher demands on Shuangliu Airport's support capacity and service level. The passenger flow diversion brought about by the opening of Tianfu Airport has also created a valuable window of opportunity for Shuangliu Airport to implement systematic reinforcement and renovation. In this context, the Shuangliu Airport quality improvement and renovation project, with a total investment of approximately 3.152 billion yuan, was launched in September 2023. It adheres to the core requirement of non-stop construction for full-scale reinforcement and upgrading. This is not only an inevitable measure to eliminate facility safety hazards and build a solid defense line for aviation operations, but also a key action to adapt to regional development strategies, enabling the two airports to advance together and build an international aviation hub.
