    Myanmar

  • Project Background:

Myanmar National Theatre, the largest theatre in Myanmar, was completed with Chinese government aid in 1990 and stands as one of the landmark projects embodying the paukphaw friendship between China and Myanmar.

To better leverage the theatre’s functions and address issues arising from years of operation, China and Myanmar agreed to carry out an upgrading and renovation project in January 2016 and signed the agreement for the China-aided Renovation Project of Myanmar National Theatre, which drew widespread attention from all sectors of Myanmar society. Construction officially kicked off in August 2019 and forged ahead amid challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic. Comprehensive renovation works were carried out without altering the theatre’s main structure, covering the refurbishment of the auditorium, stage, VIP lounges and other spaces, as well as the replacement of lighting, sound, air conditioning and other equipment. The renovation project was successfully completed in November 2022. Following the handover of the finished theatre, China continued to provide technical support and skill training to Myanmar for a certain period to guarantee the proper operation of the venue. Today, Myanmar National Theatre has been upgraded into a high-standard modern arts venue, serving as a platform for local artists to showcase their talents and for the public to appreciate cultural and artistic performances.

Since its inauguration, the China-aided National Theatre has hosted artistic exchanges, conferences, exhibitions and other events for artists from all walks of life in Myanmar and international performers alike. Myanmar expresses gratitude to the Chinese construction team for surmounting various hardships and fulfilling the renovation work with full dedication, a testament to the profound paukphaw friendship shared by the Chinese and Myanmar peoples.
